I got these shoes to wear in my sea kayak, which has very limited foot room. My cockpit is so snug in the foot area that none of the more traditional water shoe styles fit very well. When I go kayaking, I'm going in and out of the water and dealing with all kinds of mud, rocks, gravel, and shells at my launch points. So my perfect kayaking shoe must fit close to my foot to maximize my toe room in the cockpit, AND go from land to water and back again, AND have a thick, sturdy sole to protect my feet from razor-sharp rocks and shells. Oh, yes, and it has to be comfortable enough to wear for hours with wet feet. FILA's Skeletoes fit the bill perfectly and are literally the only shoe I've found that does all those things.

The upper is a thin neoprene and will help keep your feet from getting chilled in cooler water conditions. I used them for paddling in Lake Michigan where the water is on the cool side and my feet were never chilled. However, it is not warm like the true cold-water paddling booty I used for Lake Superior. It does not have drainage ports like a true water shoe, and retains some water which can make things a little squishy, but it is no worse than my NRS cold-water booties. You can have warmth, or you can have drainage, but you can't have both. As you might expect, it keeps mud and grit out better than a sandal, but not as well as a booty. I have not yet tried it in hot conditions, and the neoprene is on the warm side, so I wonder if it may be too hot for the warm-water summer paddling I normally do on the Gulf Coast.

The outsole is thick and stiff like a traditional shoe-- not at all like the barefoot-style sole of a Vibram Fivefinger shoe. If you're looking for a "barefoot" shoe, this is probably not for you. But for my purposes, the thicker, stiffer sole is just what I wanted. Unlike barefoot advocates, I DON'T want to feel every piece of gravel under my feet. I did slip and fall on one algae-covered boat ramp (no harm done, fortunately), but I don't fault the shoes for that. Only a miracle shoe could help you keep your footing on that some of that stuff.

I wore it around the house for a few days before field-testing it, and I noticed right away that there are some little nubbins of stiff leather inside some of the toe pockets that can poke a bit. These softened up after just a few hours of casual wear and are only a minor annoyance. What concerns me more is the grab loops at the front and back. First, they're made of stretchy elastic which just seems like a really dumb choice of material for a grab loop. More importantly, on the third day of very low-key wear, one of the loops broke off in my hand as I was using it to pull the shoe on. I debated sending them back, but I was one day away from leaving for a week-long kayaking trip, and I didn't have time to shop for alternatives. And they seemed perfect in every other way. So I cut the broken loop off and lived with it. Fortunately, the loop is not essential to getting the shoe on or off, and I barely noticed its absence on my trip. Aside from the broken loop, they performed very well and handled six consecutive days of paddling with aplomb. The only time they were uncomfortable was when I got some sand inside one and it rubbed my heel raw. Once I rinsed the shoe and my foot very carefully, my feet were happy again.

I would recommend them as a moderately warm paddling shoe tough enough to handle rocks and gravel underfoot. I haven't worn them for anything else or for extended walking. I have only used them for this one trip so far, so I can't comment on their durability other than the grab loop issue.
